Current Research:
Dr. Jabir specializes in Black Religion, Black Masculinity, Black Sacred Music, Cultural
Historical Studies, Religion and the Arts, and Women's Studies. He holds a B/A degree in
music from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri. As a musical artist he has enjoyed
an extensive career in church music, musical theatre, and he is also a prolific vocalist,
accompanist, and choral director. Dr. Jabir earned an Masters of Divinity degree from the
Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. While studying at Pacific School of Religion he
served as coordinator of the African American Roundtable Project for the Center for
Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry. Johari's PhD dissertation, entitled, "One
More Valiant Soldier Here: Music, Masculinity, and Manhood in the Black Religious
Imaginary" examines a catalog of spirituals sung by the South Carolina Volunteers. In
addition to turning his dissertation in a book project Jabir hopes to create an oratorio
based upon his research.
